Tuesday, September 29, 2009

tena-male-guards1The Kidneys empty urine into the bladder where urine is stored until the muscles in the bladder contract causing the urine to flow down and out the body through the urethra. The urethra is surrounded by the Prostate Gland. When the prostate gland is removed by surgery or altered by chemo therapy or radiation the way bladder holds Urine is disrupted and can cause urine leakage.
Men who have Prostate surgery or radiation for Prostate cancer should be prepared to deal with some type of urinary Incontinence. Avoiding an Embarrassing Hurdle

Monday, September 28, 2009

adult-diapers

For many Americans, the embarrassment associated with bladder control issues far outweighs the urge to solve them. It’s not uncommon for individuals to go through periods of denial, during which they fail to treat or prevent the problem from recurring. Luckily, technology is on our side. Rather than going through the ordeal of purchasing incontinence products from a busy grocery store, it’s possible to buy adult diapers online.

Once one overcomes the stigma of incontinence, the problem becomes just another routine difficulty that can be surmounted like any other challenge. Many fully functioning adults rely on the use of diapers and disposable briefs, and no one is the wiser about it. The first step is to overcome the denial and set aside the stigma. Aging isn’t always pretty, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live your life on your own terms.

Incontinence and Diagnosis

Thursday, September 24, 2009

catheterIt is imperative that a person be honest about their history when discussing their incontinence problem with a health care professional so that a correct diagnosis can be made.
Important questions to be asked are:
When does leakage occur? For example, does it happen when coughing, laughing, sneezing or does it just happen with no warning signs?
When did the leakage begin?
Has the leakage gotten worse or better after time?
Do you experience fecal incontinence?
Many people experiencing Incontinence are encouraged to keep a journal detailing the frequency of urination, the amount of fluids consumed and the amount of leakage and what or if anything caused the leakage (for example coughing).
Some tests that are performed in the doctors office is the coughing test where the patient will cough to see if any leakage has occurred.
Ultrasound probe (bladder scan) can be performed to measure how much residual urine is left in the bladder after urination.
Laboratory Tests can be performed to see if there is an infection or blood in the urine.
Urodynamic testing can be done in which a catheter is inserted into the bladder and rectum and filled with water. This test measures the bladder capacity, the pressures in the bladder and urethra, and how fast urine flows during urination.

Most of the bladder control pads are about 8-12 inches long and 4-5 inches wide with a sticky substance on the plastic backing to keep the pad in place on the inside of the underwear. Some bladder control pads have standing leg cuffs to keep the pad from leaking onto your clothing.
Guards are the male equivalent to bladder control pads. They are usually longer

Incontinence and Geriatric Skin

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

tena_skin_caring_wash_cream_product_smallOlder people with incontinence are at risk for many skin problems. When urine is constantly against the skin of an older person their skin becomes waterlogged and fragile. This causes the skin to become more susceptible to injury due to the friction or pressure from the gentle rubbing of bed linens or Adult Diapers.
An irritation or break down of the perineal dermatitis or Diaper rash can result when a person’s skin is exposed to moisture and chemicals in urine and feces.
Bacterial Infections are more prevalent in older people due to cracks and crevices in the skin where the bacteria from waste can accumulate and grow.
Ammonia from urine can cause skin irritation due to increasing the skin’s ph level. Bacteria can grow much more rapidly when exposed to ammonia because ammonia acts as a nutrient to bacteria.
A constant damp and warm environment can induce Fungal infections where the rash is red itchy and sore.
