Bulking Agents and Stress Incontinence

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

dependThere are procedures that can be performed to treat Stress Incontinence such as injecting substances into urethra to keep it closed. These substances are known as Bulking Agents. Bulking agent procedures are easily performed in a doctors office with minimal anesthesia and takes about 5 minutes. The down side to these procedures is the fact they don’t last forever. You will probably have to get the procedure done every 6-18 months. The bulking agent is injected through a needle into the urethra using a cytoscope so the doctor is able to view the urethra.
Materials used as bulking agents are collagen, Carbon-coated zirconium beads and Coaptite. Collagen is a natural fibrous protein found in connective tissue, bone and cartilage of people and animals. If you’re using this substance a skin test must be performed to make sure you’re not allergic to it. Carbon-coated zirconium beads are a synthetic material that does not cause allergic reactions in people. Coaptite is also a synthetic material similar to collagen that’s permanently implanted in the body and causes no allergic reactions.

Sling Procedures to Treat Stress Incontinence

Monday, November 23, 2009

attends-briefs-2There are a few surgical procedures developed to treat stress incontinence. Here we will discuss sling procedures. The most universal surgery to treat stress incontinence is a sling procedure. Sling Procedure uses strips of your body’s tissue or synthetic material to create a pelvic sling around your bladder neck and the tube that carries urine from the bladder (urethra). The sling sustains the urethra allowing it to keep closed, especially when a person coughs or sneezes. These slings usually have high rates of success and low risks of complications.
No stitches are required when attaching a tension-free sling. The tension free sling is made from a synthetic strip of mesh. Scar tissue will form around the mesh to keep the sling from moving.
Adjustable slings are when the surgeon makes a small vaginal incision and a small abdominal incision to insert the sling. While the person is awake, the doctor tests and adjusts the sling’s tension according to the person’s needs. Adjustments can continue to be made months or years later and require only a local anesthetic to access the adjustable portion. This method needs more testing to determine how effective it actually is over a period of time.
Conventional slings are when the surgeon inserts a sling through a vaginal incision and brings it around the bladder neck. The sling may be made of a synthetic material, your own tissue or animal tissue. The surgeon brings the ends of the sling through a small abdominal incision and attaches them to pelvic tissue or to the abdominal wall with stitches to achieve the right amount of tension. Conventional slings sometimes require a larger incision and an overnight stay in a hospital.

Coping with Overactive Bladder

Thursday, November 12, 2009

attends-disposable-briefsIt’s not uncommon for older Americans to experience a potentially embarrassing problem. If you sometimes feel an irrepressible urge to use the bathroom immediately, you are not alone. Overactive bladder can lead to urinary incontinence in some cases, and that possibility really isn’t acceptable in polite company. Still, limiting your regular activities and putting off social obligations isn’t fair to yourself, your friends or family.

The best way to deal with the situation is to take a proactive approach. Talk to your doctor about such strategies as regulating fluid consumption, boosting fiber intake and scheduling trips to the toilet. Attends disposable briefs represent an invaluable safety net in case you aren’t able to make it to the bathroom in time. In all likelihood, your problem will be straightened out before long; it’s just a matter of bringing it to your doctor’s attention.
