Being Prepared

Monday, May 02, 2011

It is extremely hard to go through the transition of getting older. Your body starts to get a mind of its own. Your bones get weaker; your memory doesn’t work as well. Incontinence is the most embarrassing factor.

Using Prevail pads is a good way to eliminate the chance of embarrassment. Over-stimulated bladders are more common as one gets older. It can be quite embarrassing to have an accident and not be prepared. It’s best to be prepared in any situation.

Women and Fecal Incontinence

Friday, April 08, 2011

According to a new study from Australia, one in five adult women suffers from fecal incontinence. Women who reported fecal incontinence were more likely to have bladder control issues as well. The same kind of nerves and tissues affect both types of incontinence.

The study is significant because it helps fill in the gaps of this under-reported issue. One in five women may seem high, but the truth is not much research has been done to see how common fecal incontinence is. Likely, embarrassment associated with incontinence has led to under-reporting. For men and women who are affected by incontinence, wearing adult incontinence briefs can offer security and comfort.

Mardi Gras’ Big Babies

Friday, March 25, 2011

New Orleans may be synonymous with Mardi Gras, but Metairie also gets in on the action with a large parade of its own. Some of the participants in the parade have some far out costumes. Seven men were decked out as babies.

The men, all lifelong friends, call themselves “The Big Babies.” As part of their outfits they wear adult diapers, bonnets, binkies, and bibs. Said one of the Big Babies to a local newspaper, “There are not a lot of men who can pull off these diapers…” All in all it was an amusing sight for parade attendees.

Talk to a Doctor

Monday, March 14, 2011

Incontinence happens to a lot of people, not just the elderly. It can happen to people who have just had surgery, women who’ve recently given birth, or someone who simply has weak pelvic muscles. Despite the fact that incontinence happens to many people, those who suffer from incontinence are often too embarrassed to talk about or get help for their problems.

If a loved one is facing incontinence issues but is too embarrassed to discuss the issue with you, then you should approach a doctor. Hearing the problem explained from a medical professional will help your loved one realize that it is not their fault. A loved one will also be more likely to follow a doctor’s recommendation, like wearing Medline diapers. These heavy duty adult diapers wear like regular underwear and fit discretely under clothing so no one can tell that your loved one is wearing an adult diaper.

Dealing with Prostate Cancer

Monday, February 28, 2011

A few years ago my dad was having a regular physical when he mentioned to his doctor that he’d been urinating a lot more frequently. Given my dad’s age, his doctor decided to check him for prostate cancer. The doctor detected some bumps and ordered a prostate-specific antigen test, and later a biopsy.

Both tests confirmed that dad had prostate cancer. Many men are wary of some of the treatments because they can cause erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Dad decided that those things were small in comparison to losing his life and not being there for his children and grandchildren. He bought Medline briefs to deal with urinary accidents during his treatment. I’m glad to report that dad is doing well and the cancer has not reemerged.

Dealing with Night Terrors

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Elderly patients aren’t the only people who deal with nighttime incontinence. Young children, especially those who are being potty trained, often have trouble knowing when they need to use the bathroom at night. In my son’s case, he went through a night terror phase. His dreams would scare him so badly that he was wetting the bed once or twice a week.

Until we got to the root of his fears, we needed a solution to keeping the bed protected from nighttime accidents. Our pediatrician recommended using Depend disposable pads. We placed a disposable bed between the mattress and the top sheet, and when an accident occurred all we had to do was toss the sheets into the wash and the disposable pad into the trash. No more trying to soak up urine or scrub out stains from the mattress!

Advantages of Disposable Underwear

Thursday, February 03, 2011

Here are some pros for disposable underwear in the ongoing debate between cloth and disposable adult underwear. First off, disposable underwear is affordable so people suffering from incontinence can try them out without taking a big hit to their wallets. Second, there is a huge convenience factor associated with disposables.

Imagine how difficult it would be to change a cloth diaper when you’re out and about. You’d have to find a way to store the wet mess, whereas with a disposable you simply throw out the used underwear and slip on a fresh pair. Brand names, like Medline disposable underwear, are easy to find online or at the local pharmacy. Finally, though detractors have pointed to the bulkiness of disposables, there are new pull-up options that eliminate that issue.

Discreet Protection Against Leakage

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Over 25 million Americans deal with urinary incontinence. This figure encompasses people of all ages from little kids to the elderly. Nighttime can be particularly difficult because you may sleep through your brain signaling that you need to use the restroom. Even if you know you need to urinate, if mobility is an issue you may not make it to the bathroom quickly enough.

Underpads are a great way to protect your mattress against nighttime accidents. They come in disposable and re-usable options. The absorbent pad fits comfortably over your mattress and beneath your sheets, providing discreet protection against leaks. Underpads can also be used on wheelchairs, sofas, and chairs if a person with incontinence problems is going to be seated for long periods of time.

Briefs for Males with Incontinence

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Men who have urinary or fecal incontinence do not want to feel as though they’re wearing a diaper. They want to wear a product that looks similar to the briefs they usually wear that will still protect them against heavy flows. Fit is also an important factor. Think back to time when your underwear was too small or too big; how uncomfortable was that?

Thankfully, Prevail briefs meet all the needs of the patient and caregiver. The adult brief is full fitting and made for heavy absorbency. Easy-lock fasteners can be reattached several times so you can experiment to get the best fit. The brief is also scientifically designed to lock up loose stool for improved containment and healthier skin. Fast absorbing strips in the front keep the patient dry and comfortable.

Causes of Incontinence Part 2

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

Probably the most common cause of incontinence in adults is changes associated with aging. As we get older so too does our bladder and the muscles that control it. It’s common to experience a decrease in the bladder’s capacity along with increased indications of overactive bladder. Those with any form of blood vessel disease are at a heightened risk and should take special care to make sure their lifestyle and diet are healthy.

Quitting smoking, adequate treatment for high blood pressure and effective weight management are all important parts of ensuring the proper function of the bladder. But even if you’re already struggling with it, incontinence can be effectively managed with a few small lifestyle changes and an adult diaper product that frees you from being tethered to a bathroom. By providing increased mobility and increased confidence you can take all the time you need for exercise and other healthy endeavors that can improve your quality of life.
